A wedding invitation claiming that a man in Bijie city, Southwest China's Guizhou Province, will marry two brides, went viral on social media on Thursday. However, local authorities clarified that one of the women was the groom's ex-wife and the staged wedding photos were a prank. Following police intervention and counseling, the planned "three-person wedding" has been called off, The Paper reported.

Photos circulating online show a man in a black suit standing between two women in white wedding dresses, each linking arms with him on either side. A caption accompanying the image reads, "Welcome to our wedding," and includes the names of the groom and the two "brides."

Another screenshot of a conversation indicated that the wedding was scheduled to take place at 6 pm on April 19 at a banquet hall in Bijie city. The Paper said that some netizens claimed that the two "brides" were the man's ex-wife and fiancée, and that the families of all three parties had given their consent.

In response, the hotel in Bijie where the wedding was to be held issued a statement via social media on Thursday, saying that when the initial reservation was made, the organizers did not disclose the special nature of the event - that it was a three-person wedding. The hotel stated that it had processed the booking according to standard procedures, and only became aware of the unusual nature of the ceremony after the incident gained traction online, according to the report.

Citing China's policy of monogamy, the hotel announced it had canceled the wedding reservation. It also stated that it would strengthen its review process for future bookings to prevent similar incidents from occurring. 

In addition, the hotel called on the public to uphold the dignity of the law and common social values, and work together to foster a healthy, harmonious, and civilized social environment, said The Paper.
